13 Windows Group exhibition June 2024, Scot-Art, Edinburgh, contained a series of drawings and fired clay sculpture heads.
Having always been asthmatic I wanted to make a piece about pollution and trying to breathe. This evolved to thinking about how we keep things in and the theme of ‘All The Words We Never Said’.
The drawings were originally on long paper scrolls with fountain pen ink.
I wanted to convey human endurance and how we carry on every day no matter how bad the news is.
I was initially obsessed with trying to capture the repetitive movement of arms and legs but found myself more pulled into the constant flow of very similar facial expressions.
I have tried to capture brief moments, working very quickly where subjects either purse their lips together or take a breath with their eyes closed. All subjects were just minutes from the finish line of the Edinburgh marathon.
The marathon passes the end of my street and I have been sketching the runners passing since 2022.
